Colosseum
Best time to visit
Early morning at opening or late afternoon, when crowds thin and soft light improves photos and comfort. Shoulder seasons like spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer tourists.
Budget tips
Adult combined ticket with Roman Forum and Palatine is about €16–18 plus a small reservation fee; concessions apply and some youth under 18 enter free. Buy a timed-entry ticket online to avoid long lines, and consider Roma Pass or Omnia Card if you plan multiple paid attractions over several days.

About
Snabba fakta: Imagine hearing the roar of tens of thousands of spectators as gladiators battled fiercely in an arena that could hold up to 50,000 people. The structure features an intricate system of underground tunnels and elevators, used to lift animals and fighters into the arena, making every event a dramatic spectacle.
Höjdpunkter: Imagine a giant amphitheater that could hold up to 80,000 spectators, with a complex system of trapdoors and elevators under the arena floor used to surprise audiences by making gladiators and wild animals suddenly appear. Romans filled it with a giant awning called the velarium, which sailors expertly controlled to provide shade to the crowd on hot days, adding an ancient maritime touch to the spectacle.
Insider tips
- Book a timed-entry ticket or guided tour, especially to access the arena floor or underground, to skip long security queues.
- Wear sturdy shoes and sun protection, much of the site is uneven and exposed to the sun.
- For photos, head to the upper tiers or the Arch of Constantine opposite the Colosseum for full-framed shots.
- Avoid midday when large tour groups arrive; arriving at opening gives you quieter sections and clearer views.

4.0Visited at 1pm, massive lines even with reservation. Entry was 12€ but the audio guide felt overpriced, panoramic views okay but not worth the wait.
Arrived at 8am with almost no line, 16€ entry. Underground tour was worth the extra fee, but seating on the top ring gets crowded by noon.
