The rainy season between November and May brings the strongest flow and the most satisfying roar. Mornings around 07.00 to 09.00 give the best chance of seeing wildlife come down to drink before the scorching heat.

Snabba fakta: Sötvattnet som faller här blandas med sodasjön nedanför, och den kemiska blandningen får alger att växa som lockar hundratusentals flamingor till stränderna. Klippan runt vattenfallet ligger på 1 754 meter över havet och är en fast dricksplats för dussintals svarta och vita noshörningar.
Höjdpunkter: Vattenflödet kan svälla upp och fylla hela klippkanten, tiotals meter bred, efter en natt med kraftigt regn, och dånar som en jätte som just vaknat. Under torrperioden krymper det till ett dussintal tunna strålar som man kan korsa utan att bli blöt, medan skymningen förvandlar dammen nedanför till en orange spegel.
Insidertips
- Wear non-slip trekking shoes because the rocks around the falling water are slippery with moss and spray.
- Bring a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to observe birds perched on the cliff without having to get too close.
- Skip the lower pool at midday, as animals rarely drink at that hour and the water glare disrupts photography.
- Take a position on the southern edge of the waterfall to see the full cascade as well as the open field behind it.
