Snabba fakta: Den bevakas dygnet runt sedan 1943 och varje timme sker en högtidlig vaktavlösning till ljudet av trummor. Marmormonumentet väger 45 ton och står på en plats där över 300 människor dödades under inbördeskriget när de sökte skydd vid den italienska katedralen.
Höjdpunkter: År 2013 lämnade lokala invånare anonymt 22 ljus vid monumentets fot under natten som en symbol för hopp, och vakterna lät dem brinna till morgonen. Än idag samlas mödrar till fallna soldater vid monumentet varje fredag och sjunger sånger som går i arv från generation till generation.

- Bring a small gift or a flower. Locals appreciate it and it can open the door to authentic storytelling from the guards.
- Photographing the guard up close is allowed, but do not use flash and do not stand directly in front of them during the changing of the guard.
- Wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt as a sign of respect, even if it is 40 degrees on the street.
- I recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start of the hour to see the entire changing ceremony from the beginning.
