Snabba fakta: More than 50 tree species, including towering sequoias and cedars, share just 9.3 hectares with a duck pond, a koi pool and a climbing play area. An English-style maze of meandering gravel paths and century-old lawns makes this the city's biggest green space, one that fills with thousands of locals whenever the sun comes out.

Höjdpunkter: A sequoia planted roughly 150 years ago looms over the main lawn, its trunk so wide that three adults stretching out their arms can barely touch around it. When late spring peaks, the giant jacaranda tree washes its whole corner of the park violet, tinting the gravel path and the pond's edge lavender for a couple of fleeting weeks.

• Follow the gravel path from the river-side gate clockwise to peel away from the main crowds near the play area.
• The pond's small stone bridge is the best photo spot at golden hour, when the trees reflect across the water.
• Bring binoculars to spot grey herons and moorhens roosting in the tallest planes along the eastern edge.
• Skip the June mowing week if you want open lawns, and time a visit right after rain for the freshest air and emptiest paths.
