Snabba fakta: Climbing the hill rewards you with sweeping views over the whitewashed old town and the Mediterranean beyond. The garden holds more than a thousand plant species, many of them tropical varieties that thrive in Estepona's mild coastal climate.

Höjdpunkter: Look for the century-old dragon tree near the upper terraces, its gnarled trunk looks like something out of a fantasy novel. As you wind up the paths, watch for the resident peacocks that roam free and often perch dramatically on the stone railings framed by the sea behind them.

• Wear sturdy shoes because several paths are steep and unpaved, especially after rain
• Bring a camera with a zoom lens to capture the peacocks and the panoramic views from the summit
• Start your visit from the lower entrance on Calle San Isidro and work your way up so you save the best outlook for last
• Mornings are quieter on weekdays, so arrive before 10 a.m. if you want the terraces mostly to yourself
