Snabba fakta: Rising 3,718 meters above sea level, Spain's tallest peak also ranks as the world's third-highest volcanic structure. Its Mars-like terrain has starred in blockbuster films, the last eruption shook the island in 1909, and the park now draws around 4 million visitors yearly.
Höjdpunkter: Only one flower, the rare Teide violet, manages to bloom above 3,000 meters on these volcanic slopes. Catch daybreak from the summit and the mountain's shadow stretches into a perfect triangle far out across the Atlantic below.

- Pack layers, summit winds can push temperatures below freezing even in July.
- Book the free permit months ahead if you plan to hike the final stretch up to the crater.
- On gusty days the cable car halts completely, so keep a lower-altitude trail like the Roques de García as a backup.
