Snabba fakta: Inrymt i det gamla kungliga palatset samlar museet över 800 föremål från den heliga staden Polonnaruwa. Dess salar hyser Buddhastatyer i kalksten och en av de mest kompletta samlingarna av medeltida singalesiska mynt i Sri Lanka.
Höjdpunkter: Få vet att här finns en av de mest suggestiva bronsstatyerna av guden Shiva som dansar, funnen intakt bland ruinerna av ett hindutempel. De skulpterade detaljerna i handrörelserna och det fridfulla uttrycket i ansiktet verkar fortfarande levande, som om den kosmiska dansen hade stannat för bara ett ögonblick sedan.
Insidertips
- Ask the caretaker to turn on the interior lights in the darkest halls: the details of the stone carvings become spectacular.
- Do not miss the small courtyard at the back of the museum, where tombstones and stelae are displayed outdoors, little visited by tourists.
- Bring a notebook to transcribe the inscriptions in ancient Sinhalese: some tell incredible stories of kings and battles.
- At the end of the visit, go up to the palace terrace: the view over the ruins of the royal city is breathtaking and almost no one goes up there.
