Late August through September when the birch leaves turn gold and students are back on campus creating a lively atmosphere. Winter visits (December-February) are also memorable to experience the tunnel system and see the campus lit up against the snow.

The campus is completely free to explore, including the main library and art exhibits scattered through the buildings. The on-campus restaurants offer student-priced meals around 85 SEK for lunch, open to all visitors.

Snabba fakta: Studentlivet här kretsar kring nationssystemet, där 14 olika studentnationer arrangerar allt från pubar till klubbkvällar för 36 000 inskrivna studenter. Campus smälter sömlöst samman med den omgivande björkskogen, vilket ger varje byggnad utsikt över träd genom sina stora fönster.

Höjdpunkter: En tredjedel av campus är byggt under jord, sammanlänkat av ett 6 kilometer långt tunnelnätverk känt som "The Tube" som låter studenter förflytta sig mellan föreläsningar utan att gå ut under hårda vinterdagar. Dessa starkt upplysta korridorer har studentkonstverk, läshörnor och till och med ett litet gym, vilket får dem att kännas mer som en hemlig stad än en korridor.

Visit Bildmuseet, the contemporary art museum on campus, which offers free entry and rooftop views over the Ume River valley.
The campus bakery in the student union building sells fresh cardamom buns for 15 SEK, a fraction of downtown prices.
Look for the 'Yellow House' near the main square, a preserved 19th-century wooden building that contrasts sharply with the surrounding modern architecture.
