Istanbul is a vibrant and generally safe city for tourists, though its scale and crowds require street smarts. The main risks are overcharging in taxis and restaurants, confusion around ticket validation on public transport, and persistent street sellers near major sights.

Så fungerar det: Drivers approach arriving passengers inside the terminal offering rides at inflated fixed prices, bypassing the official taxi rank and meter system.
Så undviker du det: Walk to the official taxi rank outside and insist the meter runs. Refuse anyone who approaches you first.
Så fungerar det: Some drivers claim the meter is broken, negotiate a high fixed price, or take longer routes. Late night fares can also be inflated without the night tariff applied correctly.
Så undviker du det: Confirm the meter works before the ride starts. Use BiTaksi or Uber to see the estimated fare and route in advance.
Så fungerar det: Some restaurants near Sultanahmet and Taksim hand menus without prices to tourists, then present a very high bill at the end, citing per-person or per-item charges.
Så undviker du det: Only order where the menu clearly shows prices before you sit down. Ask the price of anything not listed.
Så fungerar det: Exchange booths near main tourist squares advertise attractive rates but apply wide spreads or hidden commissions, and money changers on the street offer undervalued rates.
Så undviker du det: Use bank ATMs for cash and check the posted rate before any booth transaction. Decline being quoted in your home currency.
Så fungerar det: A man drops a shoe brush near you, insists it is yours, then shines your shoes and demands a large payment for the service.
Så undviker du det: Do not accept the brush or the shine. Walk away and do not engage.
Så fungerar det: Scouts invite tourists to bars or clubs in tourist zones, often with promises of free drinks, then present an inflated bill with mandatory 'entertainment' charges at the end.
Så undviker du det: Avoid anyone inviting you to a bar from the street. If you go, agree on all prices at the door and check the bill carefully.
Så fungerar det: Sellers near ferry docks and tram stops offer paper tickets or 'discount' cards that are invalid or overpriced, leaving tourists at risk of fines or being unable to board.
Så undviker du det: Buy Istanbulkart or single tickets only from official vending machines. Tap on the reader at every entry.

Istanbul Airport (IST)
Rimligt taxipris (officiellt, dagtid): 1 500 ₺ - 2 500 ₺ (27 € - 45 €). Use the official taxi rank queue and insist the meter is running. Agree on the fare before getting in only if taking a fixed-price service. Refuse unlicensed drivers who approach you inside arrivals.
Bästa alternativet: Metro line M11 from Istanbul Airport to Kağıthane, then transfer. Alternatively Havaist airport shuttle bus. (130 ₺ (2,35 €), cirka 50 min)
Dricks: Round up or leave 5 to 10 percent in restaurants when service is good. Tip small amounts for taxis, hotel staff and tour guides. Tipping is expected but not obligatory.
Täcknings- och serviceavgifter: No automatic cover charge is standard in Istanbul, but some tourist-area places add a service charge of 10 percent, usually shown on the menu. Always confirm the menu shows prices before ordering. Be wary of menus handed to tourists without prices.
Always choose to be charged in TRY and decline dynamic currency conversion when the ATM offers your home currency. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Some independent ATM brands in tourist areas charge high fixed fees, so check the fee warning screen before confirming.
