Spring and early summer bring the most bird activity, with warblers and reed buntings singing from the reeds. Arrive at sunrise for the best chance to see otters and the reserve nearly to yourself.

Budgettips

Entry and parking are completely free. The on-site cafe serves reasonably priced snacks and hot drinks, or you can bring a picnic to enjoy at one of the lakeside benches.

Om

Snabba fakta: Spread across 90 acres of reclaimed gravel pits, this nature reserve features four lakes that attract over 180 species of birds throughout the year. Walking trails wind through woodlands, meadows, and reed beds where you might spot kingfishers, dragonflies, and even the occasional deer.

Höjdpunkter: Three of the four lakes were once gravel quarries that supplied materials for the construction of nearby Lincoln Cathedral. You can still see the 27-meter-tall weighing tower standing as a relic of the site's industrial past, now surrounded by willow trees and wildlife.

Insidertips

  • Take the wheelchair-friendly Whisby Loop path for the easiest access to lakes, reed beds, and the best bird hides.
  • The Moor Lake bird hide gets the best morning light for photography, especially between April and June.
  • Bring binoculars even for a short visit: the Lapwing Hide overlooks a shallow scrape where wading birds feed just meters away.
  • Visit on a weekday afternoon outside school holidays to avoid the weekend crowds on the main pathways.
