Snabba fakta: Fästningen reser sig 20 meter hög med väggar av packad jord och täcker ungefär 4 hektar i centrala Buchara. Efter att ryska styrkor bombarderade befästningen 1920 överlevde endast cirka 20 procent av de ursprungliga strukturerna.
Höjdpunkter: Registan-torget direkt framför fästningen var en gång värd för offentliga avrättningar varje fredag, där dömda fångar kastades från den upphöjda portrampen. En mindre känd fakta: den sista emiren flydde genom en hemlig underjordisk tunnel när Röda armén bröt igenom murarna 1920 och lämnade efter sig sitt harem och sin skattkammare.
