Late afternoon through early evening, roughly 4 to 7 PM, when the heat fades, the marimba bands set up, and the light turns gold against the facades. Weekday mornings are quieter if you want to photograph the square without crowds.

Entry to the plaza itself is free, and the adjacent cathedral ruins charge a small admission (around Q20/USD 2.50) for the exposed foundations. Bring small bills for vendors, and skip the overpriced tourist restaurants facing the square in favor of the cheap comedores a block or two away.

Wear comfortable shoes and a hat; the cobblestones and tropical sun make walking and sitting a test of endurance.
The fountain spouts make a perfect photo prop, but the real trick is framing the cathedral ruins through the stone arches across the square.
