حقائق سريعة: نُحتت لوحة واحدة من الحجر الرملي الأحمر لتصبح فيلاً يبلغ ارتفاعه قرابة 10 أقدام، ولا يزال التمثال قائماً في مكانه بعد حوالي 1,600 عام. تسمي نقوش براهمي من القرن الرابع على الصخر المهراجا راماغوبتا، حاكماً من سلالة غوبتا غامضاً لدرجة أن العملات وهذا التل وحدهما يذكرانه.
النقاط البارزة: تسلق حول مؤخرة الفيل وستجد حجرة محفورة في الصخرة نفسها بمدخل مقطوع بنظافة تبدو وكأنها صنعت بآلة. توفر علامات الإزميل الكثيرة التي ما زالت مطبوعة في الجدران الداخلية همساً من الأيدي التي عملت هنا قبل قرون، بينما لا يؤطر التلال المفتوح فيما وراء ذلك شيئاً سوى السماء.
نصائح من الداخل
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes matter, the final stretch is loose rock and steep.
- Arrive at first light to catch the elephant silhouetted against the rising sun with an empty ridge behind it.
- Look for the smaller cave openings on the lower rock faces, most visitors walk straight past them.
- Skip a midday visit in summer when the exposed sandstone turns into an oven; December and January are glorious.
