حقائق سريعة: هذه البحيرة التي تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 2700 كيلومتر مربع ليست من بين أكبر أربع بحيرات في العالم، لكنها طبقة مياه بركانية يصل عمقها إلى 480 متراً. خزان الغاز بداخلها هو البحيرة الطبيعية الوحيدة التي يُستخرج منها الميثان، إضافة إلى صيد الأسماك الذي يغذي مليوني شخص.
النقاط البارزة: تحت البحيرة توجد ملايين الأمتار المكعبة من غاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون والميثان تنتظر الصعود إلى السطح؛ وفي عام 2007 بدأ اتحاد شركات بسحب هذا الغاز عبر أنابيب وتحويله إلى كهرباء. في فترة ما بعد الظهر في القرى الثلاث على الشاطئ، بينما ترقص نيران الصيادين فوق الماء، تستنشق هواءً تفوح منه رائحة البخار المتصاعد والبحر الهادئ في آن واحد.

- Take the first boat in the morning; as the fog lifts, the silhouettes of the islands appear to float over the water.
- To see the monkeys, take a walk toward the banana groves on the shore, but keep your phone in your pocket because the networks are tied to an old radio station.
- For photos, prefer the northern shore, which catches the dark outline of the Congo ridge right before sunset.
- You may have a chance to come across fishermen's weddings; on Saturday afternoons, dance shows in the village square are free.
