Visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00) when the light gently filters through the windows of the royal palace and the halls are almost deserted. In January and February the climate is drier and more pleasant.

حقائق سريعة: يقع داخل القصر الملكي القديم، ويضم المتحف أكثر من 800 قطعة أثرية من مدينة بولوناروا المقدسة. قاعاته تحفظ تماثيل بوذا من الحجر الجيري وواحدة من أكمل مجموعات العملات المعدنية السنهالية في العصور الوسطى في سريلانكا.
النقاط البارزة: قليلون يعلمون أن هنا يوجد واحد من أروع التماثيل البرونزية للإله شيفا الراقص، الذي عُثر عليه سالماً بين أنقاض معبد هندوسي. التفاصيل المنحوتة في حركات اليدين والتعبير الهادئ على الوجه لا يزالان يبدوان حيين، وكأن الرقصة الكونية توقفت منذ لحظة واحدة فقط.
نصائح من الداخل
- Ask the caretaker to turn on the interior lights in the darkest halls: the details of the stone carvings become spectacular.
- Do not miss the small courtyard at the back of the museum, where tombstones and stelae are displayed outdoors, little visited by tourists.
- Bring a notebook to transcribe the inscriptions in ancient Sinhalese: some tell incredible stories of kings and battles.
- At the end of the visit, go up to the palace terrace: the view over the ruins of the royal city is breathtaking and almost no one goes up there.
