Stunning Seljuk medrese with an ornate stone portal and turquoise tiles. Explore the courtyard and small museum, soaking up medieval Erzurum.
Complex geometric tiles and delicate stone carvings directly show how detailed the craftsmanship is. The silence of the courtyard is especially impressive with the stones gently rattling in the wind and the brilliance of the winter sun hitting the cold stones.
When you step inside the door, the coldness of the stones momentarily takes your breath away in the courtyard and the shadows bring the carved patterns to life in a cinematic way. Under the night lighting, the blue of the tiles deepens and the bare texture of the stones leaves a rough but almost silky feeling on your fingertips.

Erzurum Kalesi
Clifftop fortress with sweeping views over Erzurum and the Palandöken peaks. Walk ramparts, inspect ancient towers and trace Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman layers.

Erzurum Ulu Camii

Erzurum Kongre Binası
Step into the room where Turkey’s 1919 Erzurum Congress shaped a nation. Explore original documents, period rooms and Atatürk’s preserved study.
Visitors immediately feel the nostalgia evoked by the wooden flooring and old gas lamps as they walk in the shade of the plane trees. More than 200 photographs and documents displayed inside the place offer surprising details about the decision-making process during the period of liberation.
The scent of wood in the corridors and the sharp smell of old leather-bound documents make history come alive during the approximately 15-minute reenactment offered by the guides. Local tales say that a small note box mentioning Kazım Karabekir's name is still there and visitors listen to the story of that box during a special 3-minute stop with a guide.

Palandöken Dağı / Kayak Merkezi
High-altitude slopes and long season make Palandöken Turkey's top alpine ski area. Expect steep pistes, fast chairlifts, and panoramic Erzurum views.
When the peaks exceed 3,000 meters, fine powder snow and steep slopes turn skiing into a completely different experience. The long network of slopes spread across the season and the possibility of night skiing open until late hours cater to athletes of every level.
While night skiing on a lit slope, the icy air hitting your face and the fine snowflakes sparkling under the lights during the 3.5-kilometer descent speed you up without tiring you. In technical tours organized by guides in small groups, usually teams of 10-15 people learn how to use dry powder snow, and local sweets are offered to participants at the end of the training.

Tortum Şelalesi
Dramatic, powerful waterfall on a high Anatolian plateau, framed by a rugged gorge and historic viaduct. Walk close to misty viewing platforms and scenic river trails for memorable photos.
The thin blue mist formed by the high fall of water adds a mystical air to visitors' photographs. The additional sources gushing from the rocky surfaces of the canyon can quickly change the flow rate depending on the season; especially with the melting snow, the flow can increase several times.
The pressure created by the 48-meter drop at the point where thin curtains of water fall is felt as a deep hum echoing on the rock surface and cold droplets hitting your face. Photographers also mention a detail that when the old irrigation gates are opened, the flow rate can triple and the view turns into a movie scene; most visitors do not witness this sudden burst.

Narman Peribacaları
Towering volcanic pillars sculpt a surreal landscape near Erzurum. Walk among fairy chimneys and capture dramatic light across the high plateau.
While walking among the sharp pillars formed by wind and water erosion of the soft tuff rocks, you feel the bare stones crumbling like sand and dust falling from your fingers. The tallest pillars reach up to 10-15 meters, and some have window-like cavities and thin sharp tips that create dramatic shadows in photos.
The lowering light of the evening sun paints the stone surfaces in red and orange, the colors changing like a dramatic spectacle within minutes. According to a story told by guide Mehmet Usta, the deepest cavity in the valley, about 2.5 meters deep, was used as a cellar, and when you put your hand inside, you can still smell damp soil and grass.

Erzurum Müzesi
Discover millennia of Anatolian history in Urartian tombs and regional folk culture. Walk among stone sarcophagi, embroidered costumes and village life reconstructions.
Bronze weapons and jewelry shining in closed display cases whisper the lively stories of ancient trade routes. Visitors imagine the texture of the rugs and feel how handicrafts are intertwined with daily life; guided tours highlight the human stories behind the artifacts.
More than 300 archaeological pieces are displayed side by side in one showcase, the oldest being about 3,000 years old, and the fine craftsmanship on it is immediately noticeable. The afternoon light brings the red and deep blue pigments on the stone reliefs to life, while a small restoration report dated 1887 sits on the label beneath the exhibit, as if whispering to the visitor.

Aziziye Tabyaları
A commanding Ottoman hilltop fortress that shaped Erzurum's 19th-century history. Climb stone ramparts for sweeping city and mountain views and restored gun emplacements.

Rugged architecture and quiet streets, felt safe walking at night. Not many tourists, which I actually liked.
Dolmus minibuses from the Otogar to Palandoken run early and cost a fraction of a taxi, great for day trips.
Prices are lower than Istanbul, groceries and tea are cheap, but tourist spots still jack up restaurant bills a bit.
Many small museums and mosques close around 1 to 3 pm for lunch or prayer, go right after opening to avoid disappointment.
Skip restaurants on the main square, walk a couple blocks and ask locals for a lokanta, big portions and fair prices.
