حقائق سريعة: أكثر من 200 كنيسة ودير كهفي محفورة مباشرة في التوف البركاني الناعم عبر الوادي. تلك اللوحات الجدارية من القرن العاشر داخل الكنيسة المظلمة نجت بشكل نابض بالحياة لأن الغرفة لم يكن فيها أي نوافذ تقريباً لإدخال الضوء.
النقاط البارزة: داخل كارانليك كيليس، أو الكنيسة المظلمة، تبدو اللوحات الجدارية ذات الألوان الزرقاء لحياة المسيح نضرة كما لو كانت يوم رسمت، بفضل قرون من الظلام شبه التام. يُسمح فقط لـ 30 زائراً بالدخول في المرة الواحدة، لذا تحصل على مشهد هادئ وحميمي لمشاهد رسمها الرهبان قبل أكثر من 900 عام.

- Visit the Dark Church first before crowds arrive to see the best-preserved frescoes in solitude.
- Wear sturdy shoes with grip: the carved stone staircases and uneven cave floors can be slippery.
- Bring a small flashlight to see fresco details in darker corners, but never use flash photography on the paintings.
- Skip lunch at the museum cafe and walk 5 minutes into Göreme town for better local food at half the price.
