Datos rápidos: Este sendero ribereño de 18 kilómetros sigue el camino de la legendaria saga de los Nibelungos a través de viñedos en terrazas y huertos de albaricoques. Más de 1.000 años de historia vitivinícola bordean la ruta, con pistas del poema épico escondidas en nombres de pueblos como Emmersdorf y Melk.

Destacados: Caminarás por pueblos donde los narradores medievales del Cantar de los Nibelungos actuaron una vez, y en primavera, todo el valle estalla con el aroma de 90.000 albaricoqueros en flor. El sendero también pasa junto a una iglesia fortificada de 900 años de antigüedad cuya cripta supuestamente alberga los huesos de un guerrero de la leyenda de los Nibelungos.

Start at Emmersdorf before 9 AM to catch the morning mist lifting off the Danube and have the trail nearly to yourself.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes, the stone terraces get slippery after rain and some sections involve 200 stone steps carved into hillsides.
Stop at a Heuriger (wine tavern) around 4 PM when local winemakers open their doors for fresh young wine and cold platters.
Skip the busy Melk Abbey main hours and visit the trail section between Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein instead for the most dramatic cliffside views.
