Datos rápidos: El agua tiene una salinidad casi diez veces mayor que la del mar, y aun así rebosa de vida en las superficies poco profundas del fondo. Aquí, a 2 300 metros de altitud, en medio del tercer salar más grande del mundo, se reúnen hasta 40 000 flamencos de tres especies cuando la temporada está en su mejor momento.
Destacados: Una sola bandada rosa se vuelve rosa comiendo: el color de los flamencos proviene de los pequeños camarones Artemia salina que abundan en la salmuera, y cuantas más presas, más intenso el plumaje. Camina sobre la costra cuando el viento amaina y escucha cómo cada paso cruje como vidrio roto mientras las lagunas espejadas duplican las montañas.

- Put on your sunglasses already at the entrance, the salt reflections are blinding between ten and four.
- Aim for weekdays before eight o'clock, then you'll have almost the whole place to yourself.
- Walk to the far end of the boardwalk and sit still for ten minutes, then the flamingos will dare to come close.
- Bring a windbreaker, cold gusts blow in from the Andes even in the middle of summer.
