Datos rápidos: Saint Peter Claver spent 40 years in this church baptizing over 300,000 enslaved Africans who arrived through Cartagena's port. His remarkably preserved body lies in a glass sarcophagus near the main altar, still wearing the robe he wore at his death in 1654.
Destacados: Climb to the rooftop and you'll find the exact bell tower where Claver would scan the harbor for incoming slave ships, preparing to offer comfort. The adjacent cloister holds the saint's original living quarters, where his simple wooden bed and personal crucifix remain exactly as he left them.
Consejos de expertos
- Climb the narrow staircase to the rooftop terrace for sweeping views across Cartagena's red-tiled rooftops to the Caribbean Sea.
- Visit the small museum on the ground floor to see Claver's personal belongings including his original baptismal registry books.
- The cloister's second-floor arcade offers the best photo opportunities, especially during the late afternoon when shadows create dramatic lines.
- Attend the 7 a.m. daily mass for a glimpse of local devotion, but avoid midday hours when the church fills with tour groups.
