Acerca de

Datos rápidos: The museum occupies a 15th-century patrician palace that once belonged to the noble Grisogono family, its stone courtyard still bearing centuries of salt-worn Dalmatian graffiti. Over 30,000 artifacts fill its rooms, from intricate gold-threaded folk costumes to olive presses that smell of wood and ancient oil.

Destacados: Tucked inside the museum's top-floor gallery is a complete 19th-century Split bedroom, its hand-painted hope chest still smelling of lavender and beeswax from the local islands. The wooden ceiling beams are carved with apotropaic symbols, tiny crosses and eyes meant to ward off evil spirits while the family slept.

Consejos de expertos

  • Skip the ground-floor gift shop and head straight up the narrow stone stairs to the top floor before the midday heat turns the upper rooms stuffy.
  • Climb to the rooftop terrace for a quiet view of the cathedral bell tower and the red-tiled roofs of the old town, a spot most visitors miss.
  • The handwritten captions are in Croatian only, so pull up Google Lens or grab the free English pamphlet at the ticket desk.
  • Wear light layers, the ground floor stays cool and damp even in July, while the attic rooms trap serious heat.
