About
Datos rápidos: Vibrant marble wave patterns ripple across the square's pavement, catching the eye of every passerby. The lively atmosphere is heightened by ornamental fountains and a striking statue of King Pedro IV, making it a buzzing social hub day and night.
Destacados: Beneath your feet, you'll spot a mesmerizing wave-patterned mosaic made of about 35 million black and white limestone pieces, symbolizing the shifting Atlantic waves. Nearby, a quirky tradition involves the statue of Dom Pedro IV: locals say if you stand before it and spin three times, good luck and creative inspiration will follow you throughout the year.
Insider tips
- Wear comfortable shoes because the mosaic calçada is uneven.
- Best photo spots are on the base of the Pedro IV statue and from the National Theatre steps.
- Avoid peak midday hours; mornings are quieter, late afternoon has better light.
- Pause at a nearby pastelaria for coffee and a pastry while watching trams and street performers.

4.0Arrived at 8:15am, almost empty so great for photos. Walk around is free, cafes are overpriced but a coffee was worth it.
Visited at 3pm, very crowded and noisy. Free to explore but skip the guided plaza tour, overpriced and underwhelming.
