Mejor época para visitar

Visit late afternoon for golden light that paints the mountains and reservoir in warm tones. Spring and autumn offer the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for climbing the ramparts.

Consejos para el presupuesto

Entry to the castle grounds costs around 3 EUR, with combo tickets available for the adjacent museums at roughly 5 EUR. Pay in cash as card terminals don't always work reliably at the ticket booth.

Acerca de

Datos rápidos: Perched on a rocky spur 595 meters above sea level, this fortress commands views stretching to the Mediterranean Sea on clear days. The castle was built over a natural cave system that later served as an ice store, supplying ice to the region long before refrigeration existed.

Destacados: Wander through the Espai d'Art Contemporani, a contemporary art gallery tucked inside the castle's ancient walls where modern sculptures sit against 1,000-year-old stone. In one corner of the fortress, a tiny 18th-century prison still has its original iron bars and graffiti carved by inmates using only their fingernails.

Consejos de expertos

  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes; the medieval stone steps are uneven and slippery after rain.
  • Arrive before 10 AM in summer to beat both the heat and the tour bus crowds that roll in by midday.
  • Bring binoculars to spot the abandoned Moorish terraces still visible on the surrounding mountainsides.
  • Skip the main museum if you're short on time, the real magic is climbing to the top of the keep for the panoramic view.
