Acerca de

Datos rápidos: Perched on the ramparts of the historic Galle Fort, this whitewashed lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1939. Its 26-meter tower stands at the southern tip of the fort, where the Indian Ocean crashes against the ancient stone walls below.

Destacados: Unlike most lighthouses that stand alone, this one rises directly from the top of the fort's original 16th-century Dutch bastion walls. At sunset, the entire structure glows golden against the deep blue ocean while local fishermen cast lines from the rocks just below.

Consejos de expertos

  • Walk around to the seaward side of the lighthouse for the best view of the waves crashing against the fort walls.
  • Come during weekdays early morning to have the spot almost entirely to yourself before tour groups arrive.
  • The adjacent fort ramparts offer a higher vantage point for photos that include both the lighthouse and the ocean.
  • Skip climbing the lighthouse itself, it's not open to the public, but the surrounding area is the real attraction.
