Datos rápidos: Albergado dentro del antiguo palacio real, el museo reúne más de 800 piezas provenientes de la ciudad sagrada de Polonnaruwa. Sus salas custodian estatuas de Buda en piedra caliza y una de las colecciones más completas de monedas medievales cingalesas de Sri Lanka.
Destacados: Pocos saben que aquí se encuentra una de las más sugerentes estatuas en bronce del dios Shiva danzante, hallada intacta entre las ruinas de un templo hinduista. Los detalles esculpidos en los gestos de las manos y la expresión serena en el rostro parecen aún vivos, como si la danza cósmica se hubiera detenido solo un instante atrás.

- Ask the caretaker to turn on the interior lights in the darkest halls: the details of the stone carvings become spectacular.
- Do not miss the small courtyard at the back of the museum, where tombstones and stelae are displayed outdoors, little visited by tourists.
- Bring a notebook to transcribe the inscriptions in ancient Sinhalese: some tell incredible stories of kings and battles.
- At the end of the visit, go up to the palace terrace: the view over the ruins of the royal city is breathtaking and almost no one goes up there.
