クイックファクト: 朝の霧が朱色の輝きを和らげ、数千の鳥居がトンネルのように続き、曲がりくねった階段を導きながら、苔むしたくぼみからは数十の石の狐が見つめています。企業や家族からの寛大な寄付により、1万を超える刻まれた鳥居が残され、登る道は名前、祈り、そして意外に個人的なメッセージのパッチワークとなっています。
見どころ: 5,000本以上の朱色の鳥居が連なる狭くトンネル状の回廊を通り抜けると、日差しで照らされた漆塗りの木が輝き、空気はほのかに香炉の香りと古い杉の匂いがします。約4キロの道沿いに、各鳥居には寄付者の名前と年号が刻まれていることに気づくでしょう。鳥居の間には赤いよだれかけをつけた石の狐の像が数百体あり、その中には口に小さな鍵をくわえたものもあります。地元の人々は山の幸運を保つと信じて、最小の祭壇に静かに米や酒を供えています。

- 潮位表を確認し、鳥居が浮かんで見えるように満潮時を目指しましょう。干潮時には近くまで歩いていけるため、違ったショットが撮れます。
- 大規模なツアーグループを避けるには8時30分前に到着するか、夏場は17時以降に訪れると人出が落ち着きます。
- 木製の遊歩道や、弥山に登る予定がある場合は急な山道のために、滑りにくい履き心地の良い靴を着用しましょう。
- 紅葉谷公園近くのビーチに行くと定番の鳥居のシルエット写真が撮れます。鹿に餌を与えたり追いかけたりしないでください。
