クイックファクト: ウマヨ湖に突き出た半島に位置するこのインカ以前の埋葬複合施設には、チュルパと呼ばれる高さ12メートルにも及ぶ葬送塔がそびえている。コジャ族は12世紀から15世紀にかけてこれらの塔を建設し、ミイラ化したエリートたちを東の昇る太陽に向けて安置した。
見どころ: 後に彼らを征服したインカ人とは異なり、コジャ族は石と石をあまりに正確に組み合わせてチュルパを建設したため、紙一枚すら隙間に入らないが、モルタルは一切使っていない。日没時に最も高い塔の一つの中に立つと、風が狭い入り口を吹き抜けて低いハム音を生み出す。これはまさに、建造者たちが死者との対話のために意図したものだ。
