Beste tijd om te bezoeken

Late afternoon until sunset, when shadows turn long alleyways into natural frames for photos, and the temperature drops to a pleasant 25°C. September brings fewer tourists and the soft light of the Mediterranean.

Budgettips

Entry to the old town is free. Local konobas along the coast offer the same portions of fish for 30% less than restaurants with a view of the waterfront.

Over

Korte feiten: It offers a view of Venetian bell towers and the rooftops of the old town changing color during sunset. Every year in July, the city streets become a stage for the International Folklore Festival, gathering more than 500 performers from around the world.

Hoogtepunten: On the main square stands a 15th-century Venetian lodge, today repurposed as a summer stage with acoustics that turn cold stone into a natural speaker. At the foot of the city walls, remains of Roman baths with mosaics were found, still holding traces of blue pigment 2000 years old.

Insidertips

  • You will take the best photo of the town from the pier on the western side of the harbor, not from the main quay.
  • At noon, take shelter in the coolness of St. Mary's Church on the square; the interior is 10°C cooler than outside.
  • Wear sneakers with stone-grip soles; shoes with smooth soles are slippery on the centuries-old paving.
  • Skip the souvenirs at the main entrance; the little shop in the alley leading to the lighthouse has the same items for half the price.
