Korte feiten: Het kanaal strekt zich uit over 240 kilometer en verbindt de Atlantische Oceaan met de Middellandse Zee. Het kanaal telt 63 sluizen, 126 bruggen en 7 aquaducten, en UNESCO plaatste het in 1996 op de Werelderfgoedlijst.
Hoogtepunten: Wat dit kanaal echt bijzonder maakt, zijn de platanen die de oevers overschaduwen en in opdracht van Colbert in de zeventiende eeuw werden geplant om voorbijgangers tegen de hitte van de zon te beschermen. Meer dan 40.000 bomen telt men er, en ze vormen een betoverende groene tunnel die het varen een gevoel geeft alsof je door een bewegend olieverfschilderij reist.
