Korte feiten: De buitenmuur van het paleis strekt zich uit over 3 kilometer en wordt omringd door 52 wachttorens. De restauratie van het paleis in de negentiende eeuw onder leiding van architect Viollet-le-Duc duurde lang; hij is dezelfde die het Vrijheidsbeeld opnieuw ontwierp.
Hoogtepunten: Binnen de dikke stenen muren kun je je oor tegen de muur leggen en het gebrul horen van het water dat door de slotgracht uit de dertiende eeuw stroomt. Het paleis is in zijn hele geschiedenis nooit verslagen in een belegering, dankzij zijn geniale defensieve ontwerp dat de aanvaller in een doolhof van nauwe binnenplaatsen laat ronddwalen.
