Korte feiten: Meer dan 200 winkels verdringen zich in dit overdekte labyrint waar handelaren al eeuwenlang wierook, specerijen en textiel verhandelen. U vindt er Omaans zilveren sieraden, geborduurde khanjars (ceremoniële dolken) en een speciale parfumsouk waar attars dagelijks vers worden gemengd.
Hoogtepunten: Dwing door de nauwe steeg naar de achterhoek waar een eenzame, bejaarde zilversmid nog met de hand bruidssieraden graveert met technieken die vijf generaties lang zijn doorgegeven. Zijn kleine werkplaats, amper drie meter breed, produceert stukken waar twee volle weken aan wordt gewerkt en die minder kosten dan in massa geproduceerde import uit India.

- Wear closed-toe shoes: the alleys are uneven and vendors stack crates of dried limes and loose saffron directly on the ground.
- Look up constantly: the lattice woodwork ceilings and carved door lintels are the real photo-worthy details, not the mass-produced trinkets.
- Skip the main aisle and duck into any side passage you see; the best spice stalls and textile dealers hide in the unmarked corners.
- Bring a scarf: some older shopkeepers expect women to cover bare shoulders when negotiating in their stalls.
