Korte feiten: Op de muren van deze toren zijn nog steeds sporen te zien van Nederlandse kanonskogels uit 19e-eeuwse zeeslagen. Drie keer per dag wordt vanaf hier de opening en sluiting van de Sur-stadspoorten gecontroleerd, die de oude stad met de oceaan verbinden.
Hoogtepunten: In de toren werkt nog steeds het originele 18e-eeuwse mechanisme dat de enorme ijzeren poorten bedient. 's Avonds, wanneer de zon ondergaat boven de baai van Sur, geven de wachters een signaal met de trompet en sluiten de poorten plechtig, net als 200 jaar geleden.
Insidertips
- Once you climb to the top, you will see the entire old town of Sur and the port, worth spending 5 minutes enjoying the view.
- Photograph the gate opening ceremony from the opposite side of the bay, so the shot is most impressive.
- At noon it is especially hot here, so do not forget a head covering and water.
- If you want to see the gate mechanism up close, politely ask the guards, they usually allow it.
