Korte feiten: Deze markt in het hart van Mogadishu trekt dagelijks tot 50.000 mensen, die hier komen voor alles van vers voedsel tot wapens. De markt bestaat al meer dan vijf decennia en de naam betekent in het Somalisch "de plek waar fruit wordt verkocht".
Hoogtepunten: Onder de schijnbaar chaotische zeilen van de kraampjes worden hier dingen verkocht die je in een gewone winkel niet zou vinden: handgemaakte Somalische dolken, medicijnen zonder recept en oude Amerikaanse dollarbiljetten in pakketten. De markt heeft zelfs haar eigen informele "wisselkantoor" waar de koersen worden bepaald door lokale handelaren op basis van de actuele situatie in de stad.
Insidertips
- Carry cash in small bills, change is often an issue here and cards are not accepted anywhere.
- You can take photos, but always ask the vendor first and do not film soldiers or security forces under any circumstances.
- A local guide is a great investment, not only for safety, but mainly for negotiating better prices and gaining access to the back alleys.
- Dress conservatively: long pants and a scarf over the shoulders do not hurt and will earn you the respect of the vendors.
