Korte feiten: Het wordt sinds 1943 onafgebroken bewaakt en elk uur vindt de ceremoniële wisseling van de wacht plaats onder het geluid van trommels. Het marmeren monument weegt 45 ton en staat op de plek waar tijdens de burgeroorlog meer dan 300 mensen werden gedood die probeerden veiligheid te vinden bij de Italiaanse kathedraal.
Hoogtepunten: In 2013 plaatsten lokale bewoners anoniem 's nachts 22 kaarsen aan de voet van het monument als symbool van hoop, en de bewakers lieten ze tot de ochtend branden. Tot op de dag van vandaag komen ze elke vrijdag samen bij het monument van de moeders van gevallen strijders en zingen ze liederen die van generatie op generatie worden doorgegeven.

- Bring a small gift or a flower. Locals appreciate it and it can open the door to authentic storytelling from the guards.
- Photographing the guard up close is allowed, but do not use flash and do not stand directly in front of them during the changing of the guard.
- Wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt as a sign of respect, even if it is 40 degrees on the street.
- I recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start of the hour to see the entire changing ceremony from the beginning.
