Korte feiten: The grand auditorium seats over 1,500 people across four tiers of ornate balconies. George Corson designed the theatre in 1878, and it originally operated as a subscription-based venue for the city's well-to-do before opening its doors to wider audiences.
Hoogtepunten: Backstage, a hidden spiral staircase leads to a tiny private box that was built for the architect's wife so she could watch performances unseen. The original gaslight fittings still hang in the upper galleries, and the theatre's resident ghost, a Victorian actress in a grey dress, has been spotted by staff for decades.

- Arrive 30 minutes early to grab a drink in the Circle Bar, which has original mosaic floors and a lovely ceiling.
- The upper balcony offers the best value seats and surprisingly good acoustics, just be prepared for a steep climb.
