Korte feiten: Het fort rijst 20 meter hoog met muren van aangestampte aarde en beslaat ongeveer 4 hectare in centraal Buchara. Nadat Russische troepen de vesting in 1920 bombardeerden, overleefde slechts ongeveer 20 procent van de oorspronkelijke bouwwerken.
Hoogtepunten: Het Registan-plein direct voor het fort was ooit het toneel van openbare executies elke vrijdag, waarbij veroordeelden van de verhoogde poorthelling werden gegooid. Een weinig bekend feit: de laatste emir ontsnapte via een geheime ondergrondse tunnel toen het Rode Leger in 1920 door de muren brak en liet zijn harem en schatkamer achter.

- Skip the guided tour and pick up the 10,000 som map at the entrance instead, it covers the same information at your own pace.
- Climb to the top of the gate ramp for the best view of the Registan square and the city skyline.
- Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes because the packed earth paths and uneven staircases inside the fortress are dusty and slippery.
- Visit the small throne room on the right after entering the main gate, it has the most intact original ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
