Korte feiten: Drie Romeinse sarcofagen rusten in de abdijkerk, hergebruikt als graven voor de familie Doria. Monniken versterkten deze baai ooit tegen piratenaanvallen, en de klokkentoren deed ook dienst als wachttoren.
Hoogtepunten: Kijk omhoog naar de 13e-eeuwse kloosterbogen: elk is uit één enkel blok lokaal zwart leisteen gehouwen, niet samengesteld uit afzonderlijke stukken. Regenwater druppelt door de centrale opening op een mozaïek van witte en zwarte kiezelstenen, een patroon dat al meer dan 700 jaar dezelfde stenen vloer bespoelt.

- Wear water shoes: the beach is sharp pebbles, not sand, and you will want to wade straight from the abbey steps.
- Photograph the cloister in late afternoon when sunlight cuts through the slate columns and hits the floor mosaic at an angle.
- Skip the overpriced café on the beachfront; bring your own lunch and eat on the rocks past the boathouse.
- Arrive by the 9 AM ferry from Camogli to avoid the 11 AM tour-boat crush.
