Fatos rápidos: A água tem quase dez vezes a salinidade do mar, e mesmo assim ferve de vida nas superfícies rasas do fundo. Aqui, a 2.300 metros de altitude, no meio do terceiro maior deserto de sal do mundo, até 40.000 flamingos de três espécies se reúnem quando a temporada está no auge.
Destaques: Um único bando se torna rosa comendo: a cor dos flamingos vem dos pequenos camarões Artemia salina que fervilham na salmoura, e quanto mais presas, mais forte a plumagem. Caminhe pela crosta quando o vento diminuir e ouça cada passo estalar como vidro quebrado enquanto as lagoas espelhadas dobram as montanhas.
Dicas de quem conhece
- Put on your sunglasses already at the entrance, the salt reflections are blinding between ten and four.
- Aim for weekdays before eight o'clock, then you'll have almost the whole place to yourself.
- Walk to the far end of the boardwalk and sit still for ten minutes, then the flamingos will dare to come close.
- Bring a windbreaker, cold gusts blow in from the Andes even in the middle of summer.
