Snabba fakta: Under 14 meter av det moderna Varnas centrum ligger extremt välbevarade lämningar av romerska termer som en gång täckte 7000 kvadratmeter. De värmdes av komplicerade underjordiska ugnar (hypokaust) och tog dagligen emot upp till 3000 besökare som umgicks i en bassäng som mätte 27 gånger 11 meter.
Höjdpunkter: När du står på glasbron över de romerska termerna tittar du direkt 1800 år tillbaka i tiden: under fötterna finns golv som romerska medborgare gick på i läderskor. Termerna upptäcktes först 1979 under bygget av ett kulturhus och idag "svävar" det moderna stadslivet ovanpå detta antika badhus.
Insidertips
- The glass bridge over the baths is the best spot for a photo, as it captures the entire floor plan of the bathing complex.
- Do not skip the information board at the entrance: an explanation in Slovenian is available for free.
- The baths are completely enclosed, so visit them in any weather; rainy days are even better for smaller crowds.
- Take your time to view the underground drainage channels, which are surprisingly well preserved.
