Muzeu i Transportit (Verkehrsmuseum Dresden)

Bästa tid att besöka

Weekday mornings from 10:00 to noon are quietest, when school groups and weekend crowds haven't shown up yet. Rainy days work well too, since the whole collection sits under one roof near the medieval square.

Budgettips

Adults pay around €12 and kids under 6 are free, or the family ticket cuts the total nearly in half. The Dresden-Card also covers one entry plus tram rides, so it pays off if you match more museums on the same day.

Snabba fakta: Rare steam locomotives and Saxon royal horse stalls share the same centuries-old hall, giving the collection a surprisingly regal backdrop. More than 100,000 objects range from 19th-century railcars to early airplanes and postage stamps, including the ultra-rare Sachsen-Dreier worth over one million euros.

Höjdpunkter: Climb aboard the Saxonia, Germany's oldest preserved steam locomotive from 1838, and picture the coal smoke as it rattled the first passengers toward Leipzig. Then duck into the quiet philately room, where the Sachsen 3 stamp, one of just three surviving copies, glows under a security light that only activates for a few minutes each hour.

Insidertips

  • Step in right at the 10:00 opening to have the locomotive hall almost to yourself before school groups sweep in by late morning.
  • The best photo angle is the carriage gallery upstairs, where the cathedral dome pokes through the arched windows behind the polished coaches.
  • Ask at the info desk for the daily timing of the big model railway; the whole town starts running only during those 20 minutes.
  • Spend your last quarter hour in the aviation section, where the early balloons and gliders deserve more than a quick glance.
