Getting around

By public transport

Interlaken is compact and walkable, so most days you can cover the centre on foot, including Höhematte Park, Unterseen Old Town, and the lakeside piers. For longer hops, the VBOB narrow-gauge train runs from Interlaken Ost to Harder Kulm and Schynige Platte, while the Berner Oberland Bahn carries you up to Jungfraujoch in about 2 hours each way via Grindelwald. Buses link the centre to St. Beatus Caves and the farm park, and Lake Thun and Brienz are best reached by the BLS boats from the Interlaken West and Ost jetties, roughly 30 to 60 minutes per crossing. The city is well served by public transport, so no car is needed, though a rental car remains the alternative for full flexibility. Taxis cost about CHF 5 per kilometre, bookable via Taxi 444 or Uber.
