O atrakcí

Rychlá fakta: Spread across 2.2 hectares, this botanical garden shelters over 10,000 plant species from five continents. Its 19th-century greenhouses alone hold 1,800 different tropical and subtropical plants, including a magnificent 150-year-old palm tree that stretches to the glass roof.

Zajímavosti: Deep inside the tropical greenhouse, a massive Amazonian water lily spreads its leaves across a heated pond, its undersides lined with dagger-like spines. On select summer evenings, the garden stays open late so visitors can watch these giant flowers bloom and fade in a single night, releasing a sweet pineapple-like fragrance.

Insider tipy

  • The tropical greenhouse gets steamy and hot even in winter, wear layers you can easily shed.
  • Check the garden's website for the water lily night-blooming schedule, it only happens a few evenings each summer.
  • The medicinal plant section near the back wall is often overlooked but holds centuries-old healing herbs once used by local apothecaries.
  • Bring a small umbrella or rain jacket, Ghent's weather can shift quickly and the garden offers little covered walkways between greenhouses.
