Rychlá fakta: The three streets at the heart of the old town, Sannomachi, Ichi-no-machi, and Ni-no-machi, are lined with merchants' storehouses that survived the 1889 fire that leveled much of the surrounding city. Many of these structures still operate as family businesses, with some sake breweries pouring tastings from the same cellars used for over two centuries.
Zajímavosti: Every morning at 7:00, the morning market unfolds along the Miyagawa River, where farmers still sell hand-picked mountain vegetables, miso, and flower seedlings from bicycles and tarpaulin stalls, a tradition running unbroken since the Edo period. During the biannual festivals in spring and autumn, the elaborate floats known as yatai are wheeled out of their dedicated storehouses and paraded through these same streets, and the facades of the old buildings transform into their most spectacular state.
