Rychlá fakta: Only about 44 meters of red sandstone ever rose toward a planned 86, halting for good the day the sultan who ordered it died in 1199. The prayer hall it fronts would have seated 20,000 worshippers, and roughly 200 columns still lie where the 1755 earthquake threw them down.
