Rychlá fakta: Toto jezero o rozloze přibližně 2 700 km² sice není jedním ze čtyř největších jezer na světě, ale je sopečnou vodní vrstvou dosahující hloubky 480 metrů. Jeho zásobárna plynu je jediným přírodním jezerem, kde se kromě rybolovu, který živí dva miliony lidí, těží také metan.
Zajímavosti: Pod jezerem se nacházejí miliony krychlových metrů CO2 a metanu čekající na to, až se dostanou na povrch; v roce 2007 začalo konsorcium tento plyn odčerpávat potrubím a přeměňovat na elektřinu. V podvečer, když ve třech vesnicích na břehu tančí ohně rybářů nad hladinou, vdechujete vzduch, který voní zároveň po šumící páře i po klidném moři.
