Rychlá fakta: Cave number 2 alone contains over 16,000 square feet of painted Buddha imagery, enough murals to cover nearly four basketball courts. The complex's five caves shelter 153 Buddha statues plus statues of kings and gods, all carved from solid granite cliff face.
Zajímavosti: One cave features a 14-meter reclining Buddha carved from living rock, with a hidden pillow cavity where monks once stashed precious manuscripts. Another holds a Buddha carved to look like he's breathing, with subtle chest shaping that creates an optical illusion when lantern light flickers across the stone.
Insider tipy
- Wear covered shoes and bring socks to remove at cave entrances, the stone floors get scorching hot by midday.
- Stand at the back of cave 2 near the entrance to photograph the full row of Buddha statues with natural light framing them.
- Skip the golden Buddha statue at the base of the climb, it is a modern addition and the real treasure is 500 steps above.
- Visit on a weekday during shoulder season (April or September) when fewer tour groups fill the narrow cave pathways.
