Rome is generally safe for tourists, though busy areas draw pickpockets and a few classic rip-offs like overpriced taxis and table cover charges. Use the official taxi rank, validate your transport ticket, and check menus for service and cover fees. Violent crime is uncommon, but keep valuables secured in crowded transit areas.

Jak to funguje: A person approaches and places a rose or a string bracelet on you, then demands payment for the gift before you can hand it back. Often works in pairs to corner the tourist.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Do not make eye contact, keep your hands busy, and say a firm no. Walk away and do not accept anything handed to you.
Jak to funguje: A seemingly helpful local points out dirt on your shirt, asks for directions, or offers to take your photo. While you are distracted, an accomplice lifts your wallet or phone.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Keep a hand on your valuables and politely refuse help you did not ask for. Do not let strangers handle your belongings.
Jak to funguje: Drivers without a taxi license approach arriving passengers inside or just outside the terminal and offer a ride at a high or unclear price. They are not metered and may take long routes.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Only take licensed white taxis from the official rank outside Arrivals. Never follow someone who approaches you indoors.
Jak to funguje: Some licensed drivers refuse to turn on the meter and quote an inflated flat rate, or claim night or luggage surcharges that do not apply. Fixed fares and published supplements exist.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Ask for the meter or the official fixed airport fare before the ride. Refuse rides where no meter is started.
Jak to funguje: Restaurants near major sights display no prices, add heavy cover and service charges, or charge separately for bread placed on the table. Bills arrive much higher than expected.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Check that prices are printed on the menu before sitting down. Ask about coperto and service charges and refuse bread you did not order.
Jak to funguje: Bureaux de change near main squares advertise no commission but apply a very wide buy-sell spread or hide fees, leaving you with far fewer euros than expected.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Withdraw from a bank ATM instead, or use a major bank's exchange counter. Compare the actual rate against the mid-market rate before converting.
Jak to funguje: Someone with a clipboard asks you to sign a petition for a fake charity, then presses for cash. Children sometimes work these in pedestrian areas or on buses.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Do not sign anything or handle the clipboard. Say no and keep walking, and keep your wallet deep in a zipped pocket.
Jak to funguje: On streets near the Colosseum and Vatican, people sell 'skip the line' tickets that are overpriced, fake, or not valid for the site they promise. They may also be reselling rescheduled vouchers.
Jak se tomu vyhnout: Buy official tickets only from the official websites of the site or from the official ticket offices. Check that the vendor is listed on the official site.
Ignorujte pouliční prodejce: rezervujte oficiální vstupenky a prohlídky se zrušením zdarma.
Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
Férová cena taxíku (oficiální, přes den): 50 €. Official fixed fare from Fiumicino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls is 50 EUR. Use only the licensed white taxis at the official rank outside arrivals and confirm the fixed fare before getting in.
Nejlepší alternativa: Leonardo Express train to Termini station (14 €, asi 32 min)
Spropitné: Tipping is not expected in Rome. Round up in restaurants or leave a small amount if service was good, but there is no obligation. Taxi drivers do not expect tips. Tour guides appreciate a small tip, around 10%.
Vstupní a servisní poplatky: A cover charge, called coperto, is legal and normally 1 to 2 EUR per person, shown on the menu. A 10% service charge, servizio, may appear in tourist-heavy restaurants. Always check the menu for these fees and avoid places that display no prices at all.
Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion when the ATM offers your home currency. Prefer bank-attached ATMs over independent machines, which often carry steep fees. Notify your bank of travel and use a card with no foreign transaction fees.
