About

Quick facts: Graz's Copacabana Beach along the Mur River transforms three kilometers of riverbank into a free public swimming and lounging area each summer. Over 50,000 square meters of green spaces, beaches, and floating pontoons accommodate up to 12,000 visitors on hot days.

Highlights: What looks like a slice of Rio in central Europe is actually a former industrial wasteland turned city beach. Sand was trucked in to create actual beaches alongside the river's floating wooden decks, and you can swim directly in the Mur with the Graz skyline rising behind you.

Insider tips

  • Arrive before 11am on weekends to claim a spot on the wooden pontoon decks before the crowds roll in.
  • The Mur's current is gentle, but stick to the designated swimming zones marked by buoys for safety.
  • Bring water shoes as the riverbed near the shore has small pebbles and occasional sharp spots.
  • The best sunset views come from the western bank looking back at the Graz skyline and the Murinsel island.
