The Bund
Best time to visit
Between 5 PM and 7 PM to see the transition from day to night, when the building lights turn on and the sky takes on shades of orange. Clear days in autumn (October to November) offer the best visibility of the horizon across the river.
Budget tips
Walking along the avenue is completely free, and the best viewpoint, on the second floor of the customs building, also has no entrance fee. Avoid the expensive tourist boat rides (above 120 yuan); the view from the waterfront promenade is already spectacular and free.

About
Quick facts: The river air brings the sound of boat bells and the smell of roasted food. The nearly 1.5-kilometer-long stone path is surrounded by over 50 old buildings of different styles. This used to be the financial network center of East Asia. More clocks and marble gates still attract photographers in the morning searching for perfect light.
Highlights: The breeze along the shore mixes the smell of damp metal and the sound of camera shutters. Often between five and seven in the morning, brides, grooms, and photo groups create a long string of light using warm-colored reflectors. The mechanical clock on the bell tower gives a long tone with three short sounds every quarter of an hour that echoes throughout the night. Long exposure photographs often use this effect to create dynamic light displays at night.
