Nanjing City Wall (Zhonghua Gate)
Best time to visit
Visit on a clear morning (8:00-10:00 AM) to watch sunlight pour through the gate arches and enjoy the ramparts before tour groups arrive in force. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the wall-top path.
Budget tips
Entry costs 50 RMB per person. The Nanjing City Wall annual pass (100 RMB) covers Zhonghua Gate plus all other wall sections and is worth it if you plan to visit two or more segments. Skip the overpriced golf cart tour inside the gate complex , every interesting spot is walkable in 20 minutes.

About
Quick facts: Stretching over 35 kilometers, this ancient fortification once enclosed an imperial capital larger than Constantinople at its peak. Its brick walls contain over 350 million individual bricks, each stamped with the name of the kiln worker who made it , a medieval quality control system that kept builders accountable.
Highlights: At Zhonghua Gate, you can walk through a triple-gate defensive complex with 27 hidden underground藏兵洞 (soldier hideouts) carved into the foundation, each large enough to station over 3,000 troops in total. From the top, look down at the three massive portcullis slots where iron gates would drop to trap invading armies in a kill zone between the inner and outer barbicans.
